Lebbeus Woods
Biographie

Born in 1940, Lebbeus Woods is widely regarded
as the most exciting and original architectural visionary today. His body of theoretical work and extraordinary drawings have served as inspiration for architects, artists and legions of students.

Lebbeus Woods is most interested in zones of crisis, be they cities that have been damaged by major earthquakes or wars such as San Francisco and Sarajevo or those suffering the long-term effects of economic embargo such as Havana. Unlike a conventional architect, he deliberately picks these sites of catastrophe to build from, believing it an erasure of both history and memory to destroy the remains of existing buildings in order to mimic and rebuild what clearly did not stand up to the test of natural or human assault. Breaking down the hierarchies that shape traditional orthogonal architecture, Woods’ designs consist of liberated structures made up of aggressive complex shapes and harshly organic contours which are built around existing buildings.
